Julietta Talks “Smooth Sailing” & Her Banana Phobia

New York City’s fashion-forward It Girl, Julietta, releases her most vulnerable project to date, sharing stories from her adolescence as an easily impressionable youth, getting caught up with the allure of big-city excess that led to addiction and struggles with mental health. While struggling to gain her sense of self, Julietta discovered her voice through songwriting as part coping mechanism, part cathartic release. Julietta’s personal journey culminates in Smooth Sailing and her need to escape bleeds through every track.

In “Smooth Sailing,” a mantra to discover yourself and grow, the lyrics read: “I’m finding my way.

“Smooth Sailing reminds me where I’ve been and where I am going,” Julietta says of the songs. “No matter what all the hardships and struggles may be now or have been then, there is always going to be light at the end of the tunnel. Everything will be okay 🙂 I have felt deep pain, struggled with addictions, and every day learning how to love myself, but at the end I always make it out to some sort of happy place. It’s never too late, and it’s never over!”

As a whole, Julietta’s pinpointed and layered delivery as well as a cheerful production on Smooth Sailing creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that will make you sail away. Julietta’s Smooth Sailing album will be out on August 8th via +1 Records.

Check out our Q&A with Julietta below:

GGM: How did you get here? Did you always know you’d be a musician?

“I always knew I wanted to continue practicing my craft in songwriting and as a singer. It feels too good, couldn’t stray away from it. I would like my life to always be surrounded by love and passion. There was no other option than to stick to what makes me happy.”

GGM: What has been your proudest moment so far in life? Music or otherwise?

“My proudest moments are when I see my growth.”

GGM: What was the songwriting process behind “Smooth Sailing”? I know you worked with Stray Echo & Emmett Kai. Just a painfully gorgeous tune!

“Thank you 🙂 we had so much fun writing that song. Stray Echo and I had it in our pockets for a while, we were looking for the right co-producer to give it the spice it was missing. Emmett was perfect for it, and we ended up becoming best friends too!”

GGM: How do you deal with naysayers? In life? In work?

“I take people’s opinions into consideration, but when it comes to making a decision I think my intuition knows best. Everyone is going through their own set of situations, so they will always be affected by their own experiences. I always stay true to what I believe in.”

GGM: Do you have any tips for any women in the industry?

Stay true to yourself, that’s what is going to make you stand out.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?!

“I have a phobia of bananas haha”
