Introducing: I’m with Her (Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan)

I’m With Her is Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan. An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “… that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Bath, England, with Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Paul McCartney) at Real World Studios and will be released February 16, 2018.

After years of crossing paths in their intersecting scenes, I’m With Her came together by happenstance for an off-the-cuff performance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival during the summer of 2014. The multi-Grammy-Award-winners have individually released nine solo efforts, co-founded two seminal bands (Nickel Creek and Crooked Still), and contributed to critically acclaimed albums from a host of esteemed artists. The band has garnered tremendous praise for their unique blend of instrumental interplay and indelible harmonies.

Additionally, I’m With Her has announced a world tour that will kick off in early 2018 and bring the band to major cities across the globe including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, and more – full list of tour dates is below.

We got to do a quick Q&A with Sara Watkins below. Read it in full:

1) So, I know the story of the impromptu show… 😊I’m such a fan of you each individually, so love this project. What are you looking forward to for the tour?

Jumping in a bus with my band mates, stocking the fridge and getting started!

2) What has been your proudest moment so far in life? Music or otherwise?

Personally, I would say one of the proudest moments of my musical life, was singing “Lover’s Return” with Sarah and Aoife at a tribute show for Linda Ronstadt.  I have such respect for Ronstadt and it was a night of incredible performances for her by heroes of mine.  And honor to be there – honoring her – with all of them.

3) What was the songwriting + production process behind “See You Around”?

The songwriting took place in Los Angeles and Vermont, we hid away together, each bringing little ideas and song starts, and we came out with an album.  When we recorded in England, Ethan’s production method help us capture real performances of our arrangements. He set us up close, facing each other and we recorded without headphones, playing to each other, in a similar way to how the songs had written.

4) What’s one tip you’d give to young women getting started in the music industry?

Same as I would give any guy.  If they want to be a musician –  practice, find people you like to play with and do that a lot.  Find some gigs, and play.  Learn a boat load of cover songs, because that is how you study lyrics and they will teach you new methods.

5) Whats something other than music you’re passionate about?

Family, and I love being outside, taking in the fresh air, and the sounds and quiet of nature.

“Hmm, the first two people that came to mind are Lizzo – who’s music is so fun, and Merrill Garbus from tUnE-yArDs.  I’m always interested in what she makes and does. She has a unique perspective and I have lot of respect for her.”
